TN leaders urge Modi to ensure protection of Eelam Tamils in Lanka

Agency News

Chennai, Nov 19 : Principal Opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazgham(DMK), its alliance partner MDMK and Viduthalai Chiruthaghai Katchi, and the Pattali Makkal Katchi(PMK), an ally of the ruling AIADMK, have expressed concern over the outcome of the Sri Lankan Presidential elections, in which war crimes- accused and the then Defence Minister Gotabaya Rajapakse has emerged a clear winner.

Mr Gotabaya is the brother of former President Mahinda Rajapakse, who was accused of genocide of Tamils in May 2009 during the final phase of the ethnic war. Since then almost all political parties in Tamil Nadu had been demanding that he should be tried for war crimes and massive human rights violations in the International Court of Justice and the demand also echoed in the United Nations General Assembly and at United Nations Human Rights Council forum.

Traditionally, the people of Tamil Nadu share an umbilical cord with the Tamils living in the Northern Province in Sri Lanka and leaders, including firebrand MDMK General Secretary Vaiko and PMK Founder Dr S Ramadoss have been batting for a separate Tamil Eelam by holding a referendum among the Tamils in the Island Nation, besides devolving of equal powers as agreed in the 13th Amendment.

Even, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kaghazam(AIADMK) supremo and late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had been steadfast in her oft-repeated stand that Mr Mahinda Rajapakse has to be tried by the International Court of Justice for war crimes, genocide of Tamils, human rights violations, which she maintained till her last breath.
