Rohtang Pass, the gateway to Lahaul on the Manali-Leh highway, has been closed officially to traffic between Manali and Keylong from Saturday.
Every year, the Pass is closed for vehicular movement officially on November 15, but local residents use the route even till mid-December depending on weather conditions. The Kullu and Lahaul and Spiti administrations have set up rescue posts at Koksar from Lahaul side and Marhi from Manali side to help pedestrians moving in and out of Lahaul and Spiti in coming days. These rescue posts will be removed on December 31.
People have been asked to register themselves at each rescue post while crossing via Rohtang Pass between Manali and Keylong. It will play a crucial role in helping visitors as sudden change in weather threatens life.
The Lahaul and Spiti Deputy Commissioner, Mr. KK Saroch, said the Pass had been closed officially for vehicles on the Manali-Leh highway. 'A rescue post has been set up at Koksar from Lahaul side, where eight persons are deployed of whom five are mountaineers from a mountaineering institute in Manali,' he said.
He said fresh snowfall was observed in Lahaul and Spiti today, which plummeted the temperature drastically in the region.
