New Delhi, Nov 9: Congress on Saturday said it respected the Supreme Court verdict on the Ram Janmbhoomi-Babri Masjid land dispute case in Ayodhya and was in favour of the construction of Ram temple.
After the meeting of the party's highest decision-making body, the Congress Working Committee (CWC), in the wake of the Supreme Court verdict on Ayodhya, party communication In-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala said, "The Supreme Court's verdict has come, we are in favour of the construction of Ram temple.
"This judgment not only opened the doors for the temple's construction, but also closed the doors for BJP and others to politicise the issue,'' he remarked.
The Congress spokesperson also said the verdict cannot be a matter of credit or discredit to any individual, group of people, communities or political parties.
Referring to the resolution passed in the CWC meeting on Ayodhya issue, Surjewala said the apex court verdict has respected the faith and trust of the people.
"Congress President Sonia Gandhi, during the CWC meeting, passed a resolution on the matter of Ayodhya and construction of Ram mandir. The Indian National Congress respects the verdict of the Supreme Court in the Ayodhya case," he added.
The CWC resolution appealed to all the parties concerned and to all the communities to abide by the secular values and spirit of fraternity enshrined in the Constitution and maintain peace and harmony.
On All India Muslim Personal Law board statement over the verdict, Surjewala said, "They have also said that they deeply respect the verdict of the Supreme Court.
"Everybody has a right to do their own legal remedies and they can always choose to exercise their remedies. But, the Congress' stand is clear in its resolution," he added. (UNI)
