Pondy beach nominated for Blue Flag certification

Puducherry, Nov 6: Chinna Veerampattinam Beach (Eden beach) in Ariyankuppam Commune, Puducherry, has been nominated for Blue Flag Certification (an International accreditation for safe and clean beach).

District collector T Arun in a government notification on Tuesday said that an area covering 3 sq.km from the designated beach area at Chinna Veerampattinam has been identified as “No Plastic Zone” (area south of Veerampattinam beach to Chunnambar Paradisebeach). A “No Plastic Zone” is the place where tourists or visitors are strictly restricted to use plastics within the 3 sq.km. areas of the designated beach and vendors are completely restricted to sell plastics within this zone.

The District Magistrate has advised the general public, including the citizens of Puducherry and visitors to restrict plastic use and selling of plastic items within the 3 sq km areas from the designated beach. No other activities which lead to increasing of plastic waste or plastic pollution can be undertaken in this “designated area”. This order has come into force with immediate effect.

"A person contravening this order shall be punishable under section 188 of the India Penal Code", he said. (UNI)
