The Congress' interim president, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday met DK Shivakumar, the party leader and former minister, at Tihar Jail in Delhi.
On Monday, the former Karnataka chief minister, Mr. HD Kumaraswamy met Shivakumar in the jail. The Enforcement Directorate had arrested Congress' strongman Shivakumar (57), in a money laundering case on September 3. A court had on October 15 extended till October 25 his judicial custody.
Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court is likely to pronounce order on Shivakumar's bail plea today. On October 17, Justice Suresh Kait had reserved the order. In his bail petition, the seven-time MLA in Karnataka has alleged that the case against him was only due to political rivalry.
Last month, Mrs. Gandhi, along with ex-prime minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, had visited former finance minister P Chidambaram in jail. Albeit granted bail by the Supreme Court on Tuesday in the INX media case, Chidambaram is still in prison.
An Income Tax raid at Shivakumar's apartment in New Delhi had led to the confiscation of unaccounted cash amounting to Rs 8.83 crore. Subsequently, the Department had filed cases against Shivakumar and his four aides under Sections 277 and 278 of the Income Tax Act, 1961, and Sections 120(B) (criminal conspiracy), 193 (punishment for false evidence) and 199 (false statements made in declaration which is by law receivable as evidence) of the IPC.
