Mamallapuram, October 11, 2019: Prime Minister Narendra Modi received Chinese President Xi Jinping at 5pm on Friday in the coastal town of Mamallapuram in Tamil Nadu as a first step of their "informal summit".
Surprising everybody, PM Modi arrived at Mahabalipuram adoring a South Indian veshti (dhoti). After receiving Xi, Modi took him to show four iconic monuments including Arjuna’s Penance, Panch Rathas and the Shore temple. The two leaders will witness a cultural programme at the temple complex.
Earlier, President Xi has got a red-carpet welcome when he arrives at Mahabalipuram and both the state and the central government agencies making all-out efforts to deck up the coastal town which had strong historical linkages with China's Fujian province.
On Saturday, the two leaders will have a one-on-one meeting at the Fisherman's Cove resort which will be followed by delegation-level talks. After the talks, PM Modi will host a lunch for President Xi, and the Chinese leader will leave for Chennai airport at 12:45 pm.
