Order to close ‘mischievous’ sedition case against Adoor, 49 others

The case of sedition slapped on 50 leading personalities, including filmmakers Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Shyam Benegal and Mani Ratnam and historian Ramachandra Guha was closed on Wednesday.

They had signed an open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modis seeking his intervention to end the rising incidence of mob lynching.

On a complaint by a lawyer in Muzaffarpur district, a chief judicial magistrate had ordered taking up a case and the Sadar police station there lodging an FIR.

This had led to widespread opposition from several quarters and was seen as an attempt to silence voices of concern.

The Muzaffarpur Senior Superintendent of Police, directed closure of the sedition case and asked the police there to submit a closure report to the court.

The closure move is said to be on grounds that when the matter was probed it was found that the charges made by the advocate were 'mischievous' in nature and lacked any substance. Also it was found that the case would not stand in any court of law.
