Agartala, Oct 8 : The Tripura Congress got a fillip with the appointment of Gourav Gogoi, a Loksabha MP from Assam and the son of former chief minister and congress stalwart Tarun Gogoi as the state in-charge replacing Luizinho Faleiro last night.
AICC General Secretary K C Venugopal in a release stated that Gogoi will look after the Congress party affairs of Tripura along with his existing responsibility of West Bengal and Andaman and Nicobar Island. However, Faleiro will remain in-charge of other northeastern states.
The replacement of Faleiro is significant after a week of resignation of Tripura royal scion Pradyot Kishore Deb Burman as PCC president following discontent with Faleiro. Pradyot has made serious objection to the functioning of the party and alleged that AICC never understood the sentiment of Northeast and political dynamics of region, which over the years caused a serious harm to the party.
He mentioned that Falerio and his predecessor Dr C P Joshi hardly made any visit to the state and interacted with the local leaders. Instead, they preferred to remain confined in Delhi and run the politics with the aide and advise of non-congress people including an incumbent MLA of BJP. The Congress could have done better if there was proper leadership even in 2013 assembly elections but unfortunately, AICC never felt to win the state that hurt the sentiment of the common people that also paved the way for BJP to come in power in last election, Pradyot observed.
With the acceptance of resignation of Pradyot, AICC seems to realise the reality and appointed a committed congress leader of Northeast Gourav Gogoi as in-charge but it left many challenges before him to run the party. Team Gogoi was pioneer who sought NRC in Assam, which congress today opposing the exercise. Moreover, in West Bengal Congress and CPI (M) have been fighting together against Mamata Banerjee and BJP as well but stand of congress in Tripura is reverse.
On the other hand, the Congress leadership in Tripura is clearly bifurcated after departure of Pradyot Kishore from the party. His resignation has also affected ruling BJP and its tribal partner IPFT at the ground level. Apart from that, his pro-tribal statement in several occasions over last few months has gained ground for unification of major tribal based parties and leaders including CPI (M).
“We welcome Gourav Gogoi and hope the party will do better in coming days,” TPCC stated. (UNI)
