Taking up ‘Swachh Bharat’ as a movement is homage to Gandhiji: Prez

New Delhi, Oct 1: President Ram Nath Kovind said on Tuesday that by taking up the 'Swachh Bharat' mission as a movement, the people of India had paid homage to the Father of the Nation.

"Our nation’s emphasis on inclusive growth, transparency and honesty in public life, health-care support to the poor, support to the farmers and effective utilization of water resources is in keeping with the thoughts of Gandhi Ji," Mr Kovind said in a message on the eve of Gandhi Jayanti.

People should resolve to strengthen the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi.

The President said 150th Gandhi Jayanti was a special occasion for people to rededicate themselves to the values of truth, non-violence, harmony, morality and simplicity.

Gandhiji is a global icon revered across continents, Mr Kovind said, adding that "United Nations has marked Gandhi Jayanti as The International Day of Non-Violence."

Gandhian values and many of his methods remained relevant not only for India but for the entire world, he maintained.

Mr Kovind thanked Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Speaker Om Birla for their wishes and greeting on his birthday on Tuesday. (UNI)
