New Delhi, Sep 25: Condemning the arrest of the girl who charged BJP leader Swami Chinmayhanand of rape, the Congress on Wednesday alleged that the Yogi Adityanath Government was shielding while the complainant was put behind bars.

Talking to reporters, AICC spokesperson Rajiv Tyagi said, "The UP government is shielding the criminals in the state. Yogi government has been protecting Chinmayanand and that is why he is fearless. Mr Chinmayanand is in air-conditioned room and the victim has been put behind the bar. I would like to know, that is how you would educate and protect girl child in the country."

Mr Tyagi also asked the government why the girl was arrested when she had applied for anticipatory bail.

Earlier in the day, a local court in Shahjahanpur sent the law student to 14 days judicial custody in connection with the extortion case.

Posing five question to BJP over Chinmayanand, the Congress asked why the rape charge had not been slapped yet against Chinmayanand and why there was no FIR against the former Union Minister.

The party wondered whether the UP Government and Chinmayanand were hand in glove with each other.

It also questioned why the BJP Government withdrew the rape case registered against Chinmayanand in 2011.

'In 2011, he was accused of rape and in 2017, when BJP came to power in the state, why Yogi government made attempts to withdraw the case,'it asked.

It also questioned the silence of RSS head Mohan Bhagwat over Chinmayanand.

Expressing concern on rising violence against women in UP, Tyagi said,'atrocities against women in UP are on the rise, which is a matter of concern. And Yogi Adityanath Government is shielding the criminals, which is a matter of great concerned.'

"Now, after committing a crime, the criminals go into the government protection and become a fearless. On the other hand, the victims get scared of the system,' he added.
He also questioned the UP Police over the handling of Chinmayanand case.

"The state police should be neutral. There is all proof against Chinmayanand. What action the police have taken against him? Chinmayanand has association with the BJP. Is this why they are not taking action against him," Mr Tyagi, a UP Congress leader alleged.

On the money laundering charges against Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Sharad Pawar, he said, 'whenever election come, BJP uses Enforcement Directorate (ED), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and other agencies to break the confidence of the Opposition parties in which they would not succeed.
