Salary hike of elected representatives in Tripura evokes reaction

Agency News

Agartala, Sept 14 : After increase in salary of ministers and MLAs, the Tripura government's decision to increase the remuneration for the elected members of three-tire panchayats, urban local bodies and other local self governments have evoked sharp reaction among the people.

The opposition Congress alleged when BJP-IPFT government had stopped providing DA to the public servants, suspended developmental works and repairing works of roads and buildings, how could the government increase salary and perks for the legislators and other elected representatives of local self government.

“The act of the government appears to be disgraceful and irresponsible,” said Congress leader Subal Bhowmik adding that while announcing the hike of the remuneration of three-tier panchayat representatives, the chief minister justified it claiming it would stop corruption at grassroots level administration that indicated there was huge corruption but his government was silent for past one and half years.
The CPI (M) also reacted sharply over the government's decision and also criticized Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb's statement prohibiting the elected panchayat members to stay away from the experienced panchayat functionaries. “We condemn the statement of CM and believe it will spread adverse impact among newly elected members of panchayat,” said CPI (M) leader and former deputy speaker of Tripura assembly Pabitra Kar adding that the chief minister must withdraw his statement if he has minimum respect for democracy.

Mr Deb yesterday announced salary hike for the office bearers of three tier panchayats stating that it would cut corrupt practices which generally starts from panchayat level. He said, “The government representatives in panchayats and other bodies were deep necked in corruption during the Left regime. And I do not want this to continue as this deprives the people.”

Rs 15000 is hiked for the Zilla Sabhdhipati, Rs 10000 is hiked for the Panchayat samity Chairman, Rs 7000 is hiked for the Panchayat Vice-chairman, Rs 5000 has been hiked for Pradhan of Gram Panchayat and Rs 4000 is hiked for the Upa-Pradhan of Gram Panchayat, which was less than one-third of present hike.
