Speaking on the occasion, Mr Modi appreciated the collective efforts of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and public oil marketing companies in achieving the target of eight crore, seven month before the set deadline.
Terming it a 'momentous' occasion, he said the PMUY endeavours to fulfill the dream of the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi to benefit the poorest of the poor and work towards an inclusive development blueprint.
He said the PMUY meets all the objective of 'Reform, Perform and Transform' and in the first 50 years since the LPG came to the country, only 13 crore connections were provided, while in the last 40 months 11.38 crores connections have been provided by OMCs, under the aegis of ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
The LPG penetration in the country has jumped from 55 per cent in 2014 to over 96 per cent now and almost 86 per cent beneficiaries under the PMUY have been refilling the cylinders, he added. The initial target of five crore connections was achieved well before the timeline of March 31, 2019.(UNI)
