Those excluded in final NRC not to be declared as ‘foreigner’: MHA

Agency News

New Delhi, Aug 29 : The Ministry of Home Affairs(MHA) on Thursday clarified that those excluded in the final publication of National Register of Citizens(NRC) on August 31, will not be declared foreigners and every individual left out from the final NRC can appeal in the ‘Foreign Tribunals’.

The Government has also decided to provide free ‘Legal Aid’ to those who cannot afford to hire a lawyer to plea their cases in the tribunals. This decision was taken on August 20 when Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a review meeting with Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

The sufficient numbers of foreign tribunals have been provided in Assam for those who would be excluded in the final NRC, the Government officials said.

None of the persons excluded from Assam’s National Register of Citizens (NRC) to be published on August 31 will be immediately put in detention centres, the officials added.

The officials clarified that any decision would be taken to send him or her to ‘detention centre’ only after the excluded applicants have exhausted all legal options, like the Foreigners Tribunals (FTs), the High Court and the Supreme Court. (UNI)
