Raising the fact before the court that Chidambaram will never skip interrogation, Senior counsel and Congress leader Kapil Sibal has argued against five-day remand of Chidambaram sought by CBI at the CBI special court on Thursday.

“CBI cannot say Chidambaram evasive in investigation. Grant of bail is a rule and the issue before court is of personal liberty. What is stated in case diary is not the truth,” Kapil Sibal tells court.

"Twelve questions were put to the accused, out of which six were asked long back in June 2018. The custody of a person cannot be merely to carry out searches at the accused premises,” said Kapil Sibal. Sibal also points to the court that since yesterday evening Chidambaram was in their custody, but they have started interrogation only at 11 am today.

“The probe is complete in this case and other accused including Karti Chidambaram has been given regular bail by the Delhi High Court, which was not interfered by the Supreme Court. First arrest in the case was of Bhaskar Raman, chartered accountant of Karti, and he is also out on bail. Peter and Indrani is on bail by fault. Other secretaries during tenure have not been arrested,” Sibal argued.

Earlier, S-G Thushar Mehta, who appeared for the CBI, sought 5 days of custody of Chidambaram for the interrogation.

Former Finance Minister P.Chidambaram who was arrested by the CBI on Wednesday night was produced before the CBI special court by 3.30 pm after two rounds of questioning which prolonged around 3 hours. Congress leaders including Rahul Gandhi were present at the court to express solidarity to the Congress veteran P. Chidambaram.
