CBI after protracted arguments got the custody of former finance and home minister, P. Chidambaram till August 26th.
This will in effect mean that the investigative agency can grill him for four days.
The CBI court has allowed Chidambaram’s family and lawyers permission to meet him 30 minutes daily. Further the court has also directed medical examination of the septuagenarian leader every 48 hours.
In the court room at Rouse Avenue, New Delhi senior Congress leaders Harish Rawat and Mukul Wasnik were present. Two senior legal luminaries Kapil Sibal and Abishekh Manu Singhvi represented Chidambaram. For the CBI, Tushar Mehta, Solicitor General of India represented.
Chidambaram’s wife, Nalini and son Kartik were also in the court when the court heard the case.
There was heavy police bandobast in the court as a preventive measure, perhaps taking into consideration the demonstrations for and against Chidambaram in his Jorbagh House when the officials of CBI and ED on Wednesday night took him into custody. He will be taken for medical examination straight away tonight.
Chidambaram can appeal in a higher court.
