Congress leader and former Union finance minister P Chidambaram has approached the Supreme Court against arrest on Tuesday afternoon after Delhi HC rejected his anticipatory bail plea in the morning of the day in INX Media Case. The plea in Supreme Court was moved after senior advocate Kapil Sibal met Chidambaram and discussed with him the situation after the Delhi HC order.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Delhi High Court has rejected the anticipatory bail for P. Chidambaram. The HC order said that prima facie, the “petitioner appears to be the kingpin of the entire scam” and has not cooperated with the investigation. “Magnitude and enormity of material produced disentitle him from any pre-arrest bail,” the HC said. The court added that economic offence has to be dealt with iron hands. “Investigating agencies' hand cannot be tied up in such a massive economic offence.” HC Justice Sunil Gaur, who delivered the judgment, had reserved the order on January 25.
Congress leaders and senior Supreme Court advocates Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Manu Singhvi are now trying to push for an urgent hearing in Supreme Court. It is learnt that the Congress leader and advocate Kapil Sibal has made an urgent mention before Supreme Court registrar to take the plea without delay. It is learnt that all the legal experts of Congress are trying to get some reprieve for P. Chidambaram.
