New Delhi, Aug 20 : A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's telephonic talk with the U.S. President Donald Trump over terrorism and regional tensions, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday had a telephonic conversation with Secretary of Defence Mark T Esper and informed him that Article 370 is an internal matter of India and its abrogation aimed at improving growth and economic development, democracy and prosperity for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Mr Singh also congratulated Dr Esper on his appointment as the US Secretary of Defense.
"Both the Ministers expressed happiness at the significant progress in bilateral defence cooperation and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen and deepen the relations further. They exchanged views on a range of issues related to military-to-military cooperation, defence policy, R&D cooperation, defence trade, technology and industrial cooperation," the Defence Ministry said in a statement here.
They expressed satisfaction on the first tri-service joint exercise planned for later this year and steps taken to operationalize agreements like LEMOA and COMCASA. Mr Singh invited the US companies to invest in the Indian defence manufacturing sector under the Make in India programme.
While appreciating the US support for India’s effort to maintain peace and stability in the region, Mr Singh also raised the issue of cross-border terrorism affecting New Delhi.
US Secretary of Defence also appreciated New Delhi's position on the recent developments in Jammu & Kashmir. He expressed the hope that any issue between India and Pakistan will be resolved bilaterally.
Both the Ministers looked forward to the 2+2 dialogue later this year in the U.S., the Defence Ministry said. (UNI)
