New Delhi, Aug 16: The Congress on Friday said former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi had a crucial role in ensuring a voice for women in policy making. In a series of tweets and as part of the week-long celebrations of his 75th birth anniversary, the Congress said,’’Former PM Rajiv Gandhi held onto the simple belief that women play an integral role in the development of a nation. Through Panchayati Raj and Nagar Palika bills, he ensured women had a voice in policy making and influenced local and national politics.’’
"Rajiv Gandhi was a visionary leader. He understood where the world was heading and ensured that India's trajectory was in the same direction. His determination to involve women in every level of governance and societal change was part of his vision for a strong India,’’the Congress said. In another tweet, the party highlighted that Rajiv Gandhi was responsible for banning the practice, propagation, celebration and glorification of Sati.
