New Delhi, Aug 11: No freight will be charged for transportation of relief materials to Karnataka, Kerala and Maharashtra states in the wake of recent floods.

Railways have decided to permit inter-state and intra-state free transport of aid and relief material by Goods train or Parcel Van, including in less than standard composition rakes to Karnataka, Kerala and Maharashtra States as of now, according to a notification issued to all General Managers late Saturday night.

All government organisations across the country can book relief material for free of cost to the three states, the notification said. Other organisations, as deemed fit by Divisional Railway Managers may also avail of this provision. However, it may be ensured that consignor or consignee is District Magistrate or Deputy Commissioner in whose jurisdiction the dispatching or receiving station is situated.

Since transportation of relief material is being undertaken free of charge, therefore no ancillary charges like demurrage or other charges will be levied on the same, the statement added.

The guidelines will remain effective till August 31 or till further orders, whichever is earlier. (UNI)
