Chennai, 11 Aug, 2019: Union Home Minister Amit Shah said in Chennai on Sunday that the removal of the special status for Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 of the constitution would put an end to terrorism and bring prosperity there.
Speaking at the launch of a book, “Listening, learning and Leading” by Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on his two years in office in Chennai, the Home Minister said he firmly believed that Art 370 should be removed.
So was Naidu, he said and recalled how as a student activist of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidhya Parishad led an agitation for the scrapping of Art 370. Then a professor asked Naidu whether he had ever seen Kashmir. Naidu swiftly replied:” One eye cannot see the other. But if one eye is hurt, the other will be tearing filled”.
Shah said he brought the presidential notification and the bill on Kashmir before the Rajya Sabha first instead of Lok Sabha deliberately because he had misgivings about its passage. But Naidu, as Chairman, ensured the smooth passage of the bill after debate and division which showed support across party lines.
Union Information Minister Prakash Javadekar said that with removal of Art 370, as many as 106 Central acts would now apply to the Union territory, ultimately benefiting the people. Javadekar said there was peace in Kashmir and not even a single shell of teargas had been fired in the valley since the abolition of the special status.
However, foreign media reported that agitators in Srinagar were teargassed on Sunday, while the Centre denied it.
