Ex-Maldives Vice Prez detainedfor entering India unlawfully

Thoothukudi, Aug 1: Former Vice President of Maldives Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor has been detained by Indian authorities on Thursday when he attempted to enter the country unlawfully as a crew member of a Tug Boat “Virgo 9” off Thoothukudi coast.

Official sources said acting on a tip off, the customs officials and Intelligence officials raided the Tug Boat this evening and found the Maldives ex-President hiding in it under the guise of one of the crew members of the Singapore-flagged Tug Boat. He might have escaped to India seeking political asylum.

The Intelligence Bureau officials were interrogating him to ascertain why he entered into Indian waters without any valid papers. Ahmed Adeep, a high-profile politician has been undergoing 33 years imprisonment on various charges, including orchestrating an assassination attempt on then then Maldivies President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom on September 28, 2015, corruption and also possessing firearms.

He was elected as the fifth Vice President of Maldives on July 22 2015. Earlier, he had served as the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture.

Ahmed Adeep was removed from office as Vice President by a no confidence vote on November 5, 2015.

In recent years, the Maldives Island has been rocked by political infighting and instability. (UNI)
