Hyderabad, Jul 29 : Amid poignant scenes the last rites of Senior Congress leader and former Union minister S Jaipal Reddy were performed with full state honours near P V Ghat at Necklace Road here on Monday.His eldest son lit the pyre as hundreds of people including politicians and the late leader's relatives gathered at the cremation site despite inclement weather, to give Reddy a tearful adieu.
Among those present at the cremation site were Senior Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad, Mallikarjun Kharge, and R C Khuntia, Telangana Minister T Srinivas Yadav, TRS MP D Srinivas and BJP leader D K Aruna.The leaders placed wreaths on the body of Reddy at the cremation site.Karnataka Assembly Speaker K R Ramesh Kumar and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah were among those who also placed wreaths on the body of Reddy at the cremation site.
A posse of police personnel reversed the arms, fired three rounds in the air and gave Reddy a gun salute .Earlier Mr Reddy's body was brought in a flower-bedecked vehicle to the cremation site from Gandhi Bhavan, the TPCC headquarters,where hundreds of the party workers and leaders including Mallikarjun Kharge, Ghulam Nabi Azad and AICC secretary incharge of Telangana affairs R.S.Khuntia paid floral tributes to the mortal remains of Reddy.
The Upper House of Parliament earlier in the day paid tributes to Reddy who was the member of Rajya sabha for two terms representing the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh.
Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu turned emotional while reading out the obituary reference to Reddy and recalled his 40 years association with the late leader.UNI
