New Delhi, Jul 25 : Contrary to government's claim that the Triple Talaq Bill is aimed at helping the cause of Muslim women, the vocal AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi on Thursday said that the draft law in public space for more than two years, is in effect anti-Muslim women.
Participating in the debate on the Muslim Women - Protection of Rights on Marriage Bill, 2019 in the Lok Sabha, the Hyderabad lawmaker ridiculed government's stand that this law was being brought at the directives of Supreme Court and said in such a case, the ruling dispensation should have brought laws with regard to mob lynching and Sabarimala.
'This bill says the husband can be jailed for three years then what happens to the woman during this period,' he said in his irresistible style and remarked 'jab husband wapus aayega, toh woh kahegi Baharoan phool barsao mera mehboob aaya hai'. The entire House burst into laughter as the line is from a famous Hindi song from a Rajendra Kumar-starred movie of 1960s.
'This is no justice,' he said, adding the aggrieved woman in the process is deprived of the chance of coming out of the marriage. The proposed law is 'against the basic jurisprudence', he said, adding 'You are destroying the marriage bringing the woman on the road and putting the husband behind bars'.
The Bill in its present form also goes against the principle of 'presumption of innocence' and even in the case of murder, the accused is heard, but in this matter, the husband will not be heard.Known for his oratory skill and sense of humour, Mr Owaisi said in Islam, marriage is a contract and no one believes in the concept of 'janam janam ka saath'. One life (of marital bliss) is enough, he remarked. (UNI)
