New Delhi, Jul 25 : After facing criticism from various quarters, the Election Commission took action against the persons responsible for depicting the photograph of Nirbhaya rape convict on the poll body's official hoarding in Punjab.
According to the Commission sources, the poll body has suspended Election Tehsildar Karnail Singh at office of DEO Hoshiarpur and initiated departmental action against SVEEP in-charge Rajan Monga. "An FIR has been lodged against accused Tajinder Singh of Anand Signways printing press, Hoshiarpur", it said, adding that the Commission has also conveyed to the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), which had complained against the hoarding to the poll body.
Earlier, the Commission had issued a notice to Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Punjab after the photograph of Nirbhaya rape convict appeared on a poll hoarding, which caused a controversy. The allegation was that the Hoshiarpur district election office had put up a hoarding, which encouraged people to vote, with the photograph of Mukesh Singh, who was convicted in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape case.
Mukesh Singh was among the six men who were convicted in gangrape and murder of a 23-year-old paramedical student inside a moving bus on the fateful night of December 16, 2012, an incident that shook the entire country. (UNI)
