Chandigarh, July 20, 2019: The confusion of Punjab Minister and former cricketer Navjot Sidhu’s resignation is over with the Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Saturday accepted his resignation.
The Chief Minister forwarded the Sidhu’s resignation to Governor of Punjab V.P. Singh Badnore for formal acceptance, according to the news agency IANS.
Sidhu, who had been at loggerheads with the Chief Minister, formally resigned on July 14 as Minister for Power and New and Renewable Energy Sources and announced his resignation through Twitter.
The move of Punjab Chief Minister to divest of the charge of Local Government and Tourism and Cultural Affairs portfolios and give Power and New and Renewable Energy Sources in a Cabinet reshuffle on June 6 was the immediate provocation of Sidhu to submit resignation. Sidhu had been at loggerheads with the Chief Minister ever since his wife Navjot Kaur was denied a ticket for the Lok Sabha polls. This was pointed out as the major reason behind his refusal of not taking charge of new portfolios.
He not only taking charge of new portfolios but also made a resignation drama through media. But defying the usual custom, Sidhu did not submit his resignation to the Chief Minister. Meanwhile, Sidhu made a move to solve the issue through Congress High Command. But his meeting with Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Ahmed Patel in New Delhi failed to bring any positive result. Though, Patel was entrusted with the task of resolving the rift between the Amarinder Singh and Sidhu, it did not find any fruition.
After accepting the resignation, Amarinder Singh has said that if Sidhu did not want to do his job, there was nothing that he could do about it.
