My relationship with Amethi will not end: Rahul Gandhi

Amethi, Jul 10: Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday promised the people of Amethi that his relationship with the Parliamentary constituency will continue and that he will stand for them whenever needed.

In his first interaction with the party workers of Amethi, after loosing the elections against BJP leader Smriti Irani, Mr Gandhi said he will continue to come here and work for the people. "My relationship with Amethi will continue and even my sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will also come here regularly," he said. Addressing the review meeting held at an educational institution at Gauriganj and attended by around 1,000 party leaders and workers, Mr Gandhi said as he is an elected member from Waynad in Kerala hence he has to give time there too. "But I can promise that I will come here whenever I get time."

"I will stand for the people of Amethi whenever required," he assured them. The meeting, which continued for over an hour, was also attended by some senior leaders like Sanjay Singh and party's legislature party leader Ajay Kumar Lalu.

When Mr Gandhi was addressing the party workers, some Congressmen were raising slogans against the district president Yogendra Mishra, holding him responsible for their leader's defeat.

However, after the meeting, the former Congress president refused to divulge anything about the meeting. A senior party leader Abdul Hasan, who was present in the meeting, told reporters that Rahul Gandhi has infused a new life in the workers and asked everyone to dedicate themselves for the party. He said the leader also promised not to leave Amethi at any cost.

Before attending the meeting, Mr Gandhi visited the residence of Dr Ganga Prasad Gupta, who died recently. The Congress leader paid his condolence to the family at their residence in Chowk, Gauriganj. After the review meeting, Mr Gandhi left for Jais where he will visit residences of some Congress workers to pay condolence on the death of their family members. He will return to New Delhi in the evening.

Before his arrival in Amethi, Mr Gandhi was accorded a warm welcome at the Lucknow airport on his arrival from New Delhi this morning at around 1000 hrs. However, this time, the leader was welcomed by small crowd at the airport and several senior leaders too were missing.

Former Rajya Sabha member Pramod Tiwari, former legislator Akhilesh Pratap Singh along with senior party leaders like Vinod Mishra, Virendra Madan, Sarbajit Singh Makkar were present to welcome the leader.

Around 50 Congress Seva Dal workers also assembled outside the gate where they raised slogans like 'Rahul Gandhi tum sangarsh Karo hum tumhare sath hai. (Rahul you make your efforts, we are with you)."

This was the first visit of Mr Gandhi to Amethi after he lost the elections to Union minister Smriti Irani though he got elected from the second seat Wayanad from Kerala. Meanwhile, on his first visit to Amethi after his debacle, Mr Gandhi had to face a number of posters against him.

Several posters near the Sanjay Gandhi hospital in Mushiganj area questioned the Congress scion as to why patients who come to that medical facility dies. "Nyay do, Nyay do, Mera Pariwar to nyay do, doshiyo ko saza,(Give justice. justice to my family and punishment to guilty), Is Hospital me Jindagi bachai nahi, gavai jati hai, (life is not saved in this hospital, it is lost)" were the slogans written on the posters.
