New Delhi, Jun 21 : A bill seeking reservation for the Other Backwards castes in Parliament and state assemblies was on Friday moved in the Rajya Sabha.
Moving the Bill in the House, Vijaysai Rededy of the YSR Congress party said the representation of the OBCs in Parliament was disproportionate to its population in the country.
''The representation of OBCs in parliament in 2009 was 18 per cent. Even today it is less than 20 per cent whereas their proportion in the total population in the country is more than 50 per cent,'' Mr Reddy said.
He demanded that a separate ministry be formed for the welfare of the OBCs.
Supporting the Bill, Mr B K Hariprasad of the Congress said, ''India is a representative Democracy where every section should have a say in governance.''
Refuting the view that reservation would hamper the development of the country, he said, ''If this had been so, the state of Tamil Nadu would not have been regarded a role model in the country.'' (UNI)
