New Delhi, June 17: Congress president Rahul Gandhi, who represents Wayanad parliamentary constituency in Kerala, took oath as member of the 17th Lok Sabha here on Monday.

Gandhi's oath taking was greeted by thumping of desks by Congress and other opposition members. UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi was present in the House. Gandhi, who had contested unsuccessfully from Amethi, shifted to Wayanad in Kerala this year.

He represented Amethi for three terms from 2004 to 2019.
In a post on social media earlier, Gandhi said, "My 4th consecutive term as a Member of the LokSabha begins today. Representing Wayanad, Kerala, I begin my new innings in Parliament by taking my oath this afternoon, affirming that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution of India.”

The Congress president lost his family stronghold Amethi seat in Uttar Pradesh to BJP's firebrand leader and Union Minister Smriti Irani. His mother Sonia Gandhi, who represents Rae Bareli, is likely to take oath on Tuesday along with other lawmakers from Uttar Pradesh.

As per convention, after Prime Minister and Union Ministers, members are called for oath taking in alphabetical manner from the states they represent. Gandhi had missed the morning session of the first session of the new House.
BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya had tweeted saying: "As the first session of the 17th Lok Sabha begins, Rahul Gandhi is nowhere to be seen. Such respect for India’s democracy".
Congress president, who was out of station, returned to the capital on Monday morning.
