Gold smuggling: RAW steps in to probe Pak link

The gold smuggling through Thiruvananthapuram airport has assumed larger dimensions with a Pakistan link, forcing the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) to step in alongside the National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe.

Besides, it is also looking into the link of prime accused Prakash Thambi with some of the industrialists in India.

The Pakistan link surfaced after Serina Shaji, arrested in connection with the case, was found to have links there. According to Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Serina got into gold smuggling through Pakistan native Nadeem.

He is said to have regularly provided cosmetics to Serina's beauty parlour. During quizzing, Serina told DRI that Nadeem's friend Jithu controlled gold smugglers in Dubai.

It was in this backdrop that RAW had to initiate an investigation. This also made DRI raise the issue of national security to support its case for denying Serina bail.

Separately, the FIR submitted by CBI to the special court in Thiruvananthapuram has named several persons, including arrested customs superintendent Radhakrishnan, as accused.

They were said to have conspired between April 27 and May 13 and prepared a roadmap for the smuggling.

While the bid to smuggle 25kg gold turned unsuccessful, the gang is said to have succeeded in earlier attempts.
