New Delhi, Jun 3 : The Department of Telecommunications would hold spectrum auction for 5G and other bands in the current calendar year and use its money for deprived sector and social causes, Union Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said on Monday.
Besides this, trials would also be initiated for the fifth generation spectrum, Mr Prasad told reporters after taking charge of the Telecom Ministry here. He was accompanied by Minister of State for Telecom Sanjay Dhotre, who also assumed the charge today.Talking about his 100-day agenda, Mr Prasad said within this period, trials would be initiated across the country.
“Five lakh WiFI hotspots will be established on priority basis. We will ensure that the hotspots reach areas that need digital inclusion,” he said.The Minister said the telecom manufacturing work would be expedited on the lines of electronics manufacturing. The process of digitizing one lakh villages would also be expedited.
Asked about China-based company Huawei Technologies’ participation in the 5G trial, Mr Prasad said issue would be examined due to security and only after that a decision would be taken.
On the merger of state-owned telecom companies Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL), he said the revival of these companies was his top priority. BSNL has a national importance and the emphasis was on making these PSUs more professional.
Mr Prasad, besides the Telecom Ministry, also took over the charge of Law and Electronics and IT Ministries.Earlier in the day, Dr Harsh Vardhan assumed the charge as Union Health Minister. On the occasion of World Bicycle Day, Dr Harsh Vardhan rode the bicycle and reached the Ministry. (UNI)
