New Delhi, June 3 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi will pay a state visit to the Republic of Maldives on June 8 and 9.The visit will be in response to the invitation from Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, President of of Maldives, an MEA release said here.This will be the first overseas visit of Prime Minister Modi after his re-election.
"The visit is reflective of the new momentum in high-level exchanges between India and Maldives. Earlier, President Solih had made a state visit to India in December 2018. Prime Minister Modi’s forthcoming visit will provide an important occasion to review the recent developments in bilateral relations and exchange views on issues of mutual interest with the objective of further strengthening the special relationship between the two countries," the statement said.Mr Modi will also visit Sri Lanka on June 9 at the invitation of Maithripala Sirisena, President Sri Lanka.
"The visits to Maldives and Sri Lanka will demonstrate the priority India attaches to its ‘Neighbourhood-First Policy’ and the SAGAR Doctrine," the statement said.In 2014 after taking over as Prime Minister Mr Modi's first visit was to Himalayan neighbour Bhutan between June 15 and 16.This was followed by visit to Brazil and a three-day tour of Nepal in between August 3rd and fifth.
