Sonia Gandhi has been elected as the leader of the Congress parliamentary party in the Lok Sabha. She was elected at the meeting of the party's parliamentary committee on Saturday morning.
Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh proposed her name. The Congress is three members short of the figure that would qualify it for the post of the Leader of the Opposition. The rout in the recently held Lok Sabha elections has left the party with 52 lawmakers.
The position of the Leader of the Congress in parliament was occupied by party veteran Mallikarjun Kharge in the last Lok Sabha. Kharge, however, lost the election in Karnataka's Gulbarga.
At the meeting, Sonia also thanked Rahul Gandhi for toiling night and day and taking on the Modi government raising concerns about all sections of society and helped the party win in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan.
