Bengaluru, June 1: In the wake of Opposition parties expressing doubts over the EVMs used in general election, BEL Chairman and Managing Director M V Gowtama said EVMs and VVPAT equipment produced by the PSU major were foolproof and doubts about them was unwarranted.
‘’There were allegations that EVMs can be manipulated but it is not correct. The latest version of M3 model of EVMs are foolproof and it cannot be manipulated. The storm over this issue has died down now,’’ he said.
Speaking at the annual press conference here on Saturday, Gowtama said the company had supplied over 10 lakh EVMs and every day 18 to 20 truck loads of EVM and VVPAT machines were being despatched.
He said BEL had been manufacturing EVMs since 1990 and during recent Lok Sabha elections it had supplied machines to 400 segments out of 542 and the remaining was supplied by ECIL. BEL had so far manufactured more than 10 lakh EVMs. The first model was M1, the second M2 and now the company was manufacturing latest M3 version. It has also taken up work on upgrading the M2 version machines.
‘’I want to allay fears over the dependability of EVMs. Even officials from some foreign countries have visited to examine the machines and they are impressed,’’ he said.
Rs 2600 crore is the revenue from EC orders. Now there are no orders pending from ECI. However, there are orders from State governments for different elections.
