New Delhi, May 31: Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday took over as the Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs.Sitharaman is the second woman to take charge of the ministry. Former prime minister late Indira Gandhi had held the finance portfolio for around a year in 1970.
She was given the charge of the finance ministry after Arun Jaitley chose not to be part of new government due to health reasons.
After assuming office at the North Block here. Sitharaman met Minister of State for Finance Anurag Thakur and other top officials in the ministry.
In the previous Narendra Modi cabinet, Sitharaman was the Defence Minister. She was the first woman Defence Minister of India.
