New Delhi, May 31: While emphasising on the importance of freedom of expression in the country, newly appointed Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar on Friday said any freedom brings with some responsibility .
He told mediapersons after taking charge as minister, Javadekar said, ''We fought for the freedom of the press during the Emergency. Freedom of press was curtailed then and that was black period of media.''
He, however, said freedom of expression came with responsibility.''The freedom of press holds significance in democracy. We believe in these values. We fought against the curtailment of freedom of expression in 1977. However, along with this freedom there should also be a sense of responsibility,''he said.
Referring to Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Arun jaitley and M Venkaiah naidu, who held the portfolio during the previous stint of the NDA, Javadekar said, ''Earlier, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore conducted the affairs of the ministry, Arun Jaitley and M Venkaiah Naidu guided the ministry.''Javadekar, who was sworn in as Cabinet minister on Thursday in the Modi government, held the portfolio of Human Resource Development in the previous BJP-led NDA government.
