Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister and AIADMK’s coordinator O Pannerselvam’s son Ravindranath Kumar on Thursday flew to New Delhi to join new Narendra Modi Ministry. He got a call from the Prime Minister’s Office, informing that he had been included in the Ministry.
Ravindranath Kumar has been included to give representation to Tamil Nadu as he is the sole winner from the AIADMK while the BJP has drawn a blank.First time contestant, Ravindranath won the Theni Lok Sabha seat in his home district, defeating DMK-backed Congress leader E V K S Elangovan in a keenly contested election which saw repolling in a few booths.
The Prime Minister left it to Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisami and Deputy Pannerselvam to decide who should represent Tamil Nadu. Pannerselvam naturally rooted for Ravindranath while Edappadi favoured senior AIADMK leader and Rajya Sabha member R Vaithialingam who is more experienced and has served as a Minister in the State Government
To resolve the issue, Edappadi sought two posts of Ministers of State, but Modi was not inclined to give more given the poor show by the alliance. Finally, Ravindranath was chosen as he is the only MP from the AIADMK-BJP alliance in an election which saw the DMK-Congress front winning the remaining 37 seats.Though there are 39 seats in Tamil Nadu, polls were held only for 38 as the election in Vellore was countermanded.
