Santiniketan (Birbhum), May 22: Scores of students have laid siege on the teaching staff, including vice-chancellor Bidyut Chakrabarty since Tuesday demanding restoration of 2018 fee structure after the university hiked fees by 20 per cent.
After a meeting, called by the VC at around 3pm on Tuesday, failed to break the deadlock between the management and the agitating students, the latter virtually laid siege on the teaching staff. The students would continue the sit-in demonstration until and unless a commitment was not received from the authorities.
The teaching community alleged the students have locked the main gate of the varsity as a result around 200 teachers and staff were stuck inside the university campus. The VC, who took charge in October last, said the attitude and behaviour of the students has appalled him. The students studying in undergraduate and postgraduate courses began stage in protest in an auditorium inside the campus from Tuesday afternoon.
The agitating students alleged the hike was abnormal and it was unacceptable. The fee for foreign students was also raised. The authorities said the increase in cost of admission forms for various courses was done accordingly as many courses have become self finance. UNI
