New Delhi, Apr 27: Coming down on Prime Minister Narendra Modi for defending the note ban across the country, senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Saturday said the PM defending demonetisation was enough ground to throw out the BJP.
Noting that the world of economists had condemned demonetisation, Mr Chidambaram, in a series of tweets, said that if 21 months after demonetisation, someone defends it, one could only conclude that he or she is anti-national.
"PM defends demonetisation. That sole ground is sufficient to throw out the BJP. No economist with any reputation has said a good word about demonetisation. The world of economists has condemned demonetisation," tweeted the senior leader.
"Twenty-nine months after demonetisation, if any one defends demonetisation, we can only conclude that he or she is anti-national,"Chidambaram said in another tweet.
"Demonetisation derailed the economy. Demonetisation killed thousands of MSMEs. Demonetisation destroyed lakhs of jobs," the former finance minister said in another tweet.
On Friday, Mr Modi in an interview to a leading broadcast channel had said, "Those who claim there was job loss due to demonetisation don't have stats to back it. People are looking for excuses to discredit the huge decision of demonetisation."
On November 8, 2016, Mr Modi demonetised high value notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000. He also announced the issuance of new Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 banknotes in exchange for the demonetised banknotes. (UNI)
