Rahul to decide on Priyanka

Rahul to decide on Priyanka

A final view on Priyanka contesting the LS election will be taken by her brother and Congress President, Rahul Gandhi. She has already made it clear she will abide by the decision of the party and contest as decided by the party.

Priyanka’s entry into the electoral fray has been speculated for long. It was of course not without basis. Many Congress leaders have spoken in favour of her entry and her family members too were deliberating on it.

Originally she was tipped for Phulpur, the constituency of her great grandfather, Jawaharlal Nehru. He represented this constituency in the Lok Sabha for long. He used to file the nomination and hardly campaigned. No one doubted the electoral outcome. However neither the Congress party nor the Nehru family is today enjoying such popularity and mass appeal in Uttar Pradesh, except perhaps in Rae Bareli. In Amethi too Congress enjoys mass support but it is no more a pocket burrough.

Congress big wigs feel that Priyanka should contest from Varanasi and put up a tough fight. The assessment of the local congressmen is that Modi is not enjoying the mass support of 2014 today. Nehru family name is even now a familiar name in most of the households of Varanasi.

Another constituency being suggested is Allahabad . Nehrus belongs to the place has the famous family house built by Jawaharlal Nehru’s father, Motilal a renowned advocate. It was virtually from this house the freedom movement was coordinated, after the decisions on freedom struggle are taken by the Congress Working Committee. Here too the family, now known as the dynasty, rather well known and no introduction is needed for a member of the Nehru clan.

Notably she began her political road show from Varanasi to Allahabad to make a personal assessment of the ground level realities. Now that she has given her consent to contest from whichever constituency the party decides Rahul has to take a decision.

Needless to add though the final clearance is by Rahul he will seek the views of Sonia Gandhi and few senior leaders of the party before making up his mind.
