Patna, Apr 16: Bihar BJP today asked Election Commission (EC) to take action against Punjab Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu saying the latter violated model code of conduct by exhorting Muslims to vote en bloc for Congress in his election speech in Katihar.

Senior BJP leader and Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi reacting to Mr Sidhu's statement, said here that Congress and its leader Mr Sidhu jittery over the prospect of suffering defeat in 2019 Lok Sabha election were trying to polarise Muslim votes by making such type of comments. He said, Mr Sidhu's statement amounted to violation of model code of conduct and so Election Commission should promptly take action against him by taking cognizance of the matter.

As it is, Mr Sidhu while addressing an election meeting in Katihar in favour of Congress candidate Tariq Anwar yesterday said, “You (Muslims) are in majority here (Katihar) despite being a minority community. If you show unity, nobody can defeat Congress and your candidate Tariq Anwar. Your population here (Katihar) is 64 percent. Muslims of this place are my pride”.

Mr Sidhu had said, “I have come to warn you. They are dividing your votes. They by taking support of people like Owaisi (Asaduddin Owaisi) want to divide your (Muslims) votes by dragging a new party into the fray. But, population of minority community is very huge. If you (Muslims) get united, Modi (Narendra Modi) will be nowhere, sixer will be hit. When I was young, I used to hit sixer many times. Hit such a sixer, Modi is thrown out of boundary”. (UNI)
