The CPM has moved the Election Commission of India seeking action against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for violating the model code of conduct over the Sabarimala issue.
The complaints to the Election Commission and the chief election officer were moved by the LDF local committee and by the CPM too.
The complaint concerns Modi’s statements at different election rallies in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka where he said people of Kerala were unable to call Lord Ayyappa while mentioning the name of Sabarimala, which CPIM said was violation of code of conduct. The chief electoral officer here had made it clear that invoking the name of God, including Ayappan, and seeking votes would be treated as violation of code of conduct.
Modi was careful not to mention the name of Sabarimala during his campaign in Kerala, CPIM complaint said. However, the temple issue was raised during campaign in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, it pointed out.
