New Delhi, Apr 15 : Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) president Sheila Dikshit on Monday strongly condemned the BJP-led Centre and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Delhi, for the police lathi-charge and high-handed behaviour against the scrap leaders of Mayapuri, and pledged Congress support and cooperation to the traders of the area.
Ms Dikshit wanted to visit the traders of Mayapuri on Monday but since the police wanted to maintain peace and law and order in the troubled area, she sent a delegation of Congress leaders to the area.
The delegation included ex-MP Mahabal Mishra, former Delhi Minister and DPCC spokesperson Ramakant Goswami, DPCC spokesperson Jitender Kumar Kochar, and DPCC spokesperson Harnam Singh.
They conveyed Ms Dikshit’s assurance to the harassed traders of Mayapuri that the Congress party would stand by them in their hour of need, and extend them the necessary help, including legal aid.
Strongly criticising the AAP Government in Delhi for the high-handed action against the scrap traders of Mayapuri, Ms Dikshit said the AAP government tried to uproot the traders with the help of the Delhi Pollution Control Committee, and then shedding crocodile tears at the plight of the traders through Delhi’s Deputy Chief Minister to enact a drama, but the people of Delhi have clearly understood the mischievous game plan of the AAP government.
Ms Dikshit said when such a situation arose in 2006, the Congress Government in Delhi took prompt steps and the Congress-led UPA Government issued an immediate Ordinance to provide quick relief to the people of Delhi, but Narendra Modi Government at the Centre has shown a blind eye to the plight of the small traders and the small industrial units as the sealing and demolition drive has brought upon misery on these people.
Ms Dikshit said the BJP Government at the Centre and the AAP Government in Delhi seem to be hand-in-glove to disturb the peace and progress of Delhi, as they want to divert the attention of the people from their Governance failures and create an atmosphere of tension and uncertainty.
She said lakhs of labourers have been rendered jobless, and thousands of families are on the verge of starvation as the both the Central and Delhi Governments have unleashed police terror on the peace-loving traders of Delhi.
She said before uprooting the traders, the Central and Delhi Governments should have taken steps for their relocation and resettlement so that the livelihood of thousands of people are not robbed without any forethoughts, and the traders should have been given lawful protection.
She said it was indeed very disturbing that the sealing and demolition drive was carried out without giving any notice to the traders.
Ms Dikshit said the Election Commission should take action against the responsible officials for such high-handed behaviour against the traders when the Lok Sabha election campaigns are taking place.
She said the Congress party strongly condemns this inhuman action against the traders and assured the residents of Mayapuri that the Congress party was with them and would extend all the necessary helps, including legal help, to provide them relief.
Mr Mishra appealed to the National Green Tribunal and the Delhi Pollution Control Committee that taking a humanitarian view, the traders should be given an opportunity to rectify their shortcomings, as it was a question of the livelihood of a large number of traders and thousands of labourers, who depend on this business for their living.
