Lok Sabha candidates in Wayanad constituency are to get gunmen in the wake of a Special Branch report of Maoist threat to them.
With this, LDF candidate PP Suneer and Thushar Vellappally of NDA are to have a gunman each, besides police security during campaign in areas bordering forests.
It all started with Thushar announcing his decision to file a complaint to the Director General of Police and the Home Secretary about the possible threat. Since a number of national leaders, including Wayanad candidate and Congress president Rahul Gandhi, BJP national president Amit Shah and CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechuri are to address public gatherings, the Maoist threat was all the more severe.
It was hardly two months ago that an alleged Maoist was shot by the special squad when a team came to extort money and food from a hotel at Vythiri in the district. Police have reported movements of Maoists in the Wayanad forests and also putting up posters against elections. Rahul Gandhi, who had proposed a visit to Wayanad just after that as part of the front-runner to the election campaign, had to call it off owing to intelligence reports. His visit was expected to be a precursor to his announcement as a candidate from Wayanad.
In the wake of posters threatening action in the wake of police killing one of the group members, police decided to beef up the security of the candidates in Wayanad.
