New Delhi, Apr 12 : Professor Najma Akhtar, the first woman Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, assumed charge on Friday.
"Akhtar is the head of the Department of Training and Capacity Building in Education at the National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration in New Delhi. She has been appointed Jamia vice chancellor for five years," said a statement from the Centre.
“It is a progressive landmark in the history of educational leadership and a matter of pride for Jamia Millia Islamia,” the University said in a press release.
Akhtar, who feels a woman brings a different perspective to administration, says her dream is to establish a medical college at Jamia during her tenure apart from working towards modernising outdated courses, generate funds for the varsity and have international collaborations.
Prof Akhtar was earlier associated with the National University of Educational Planning and Administration (NUEPA).
The HRD Ministry announced her appointment yesterday following a green signal from the Election Commission as the Model Code of Conduct is in place.
