Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday filed his nomination as Congress candidate for the Lok Sabha elections from this constituency with his entire family looking on.
His mother Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, sister Ms. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and brother-in-law Mr. Robert Vadra, were at the Collectorate when he filed his papers. The three-term MP will fight the Union minister and BJP candidate, Mrs. Smriti Irani in what is seen as a direct contest. The SP-BSP-RLD alliance has taken a decision to not file any candidate in this constituency which is seen as a Congress bastion.
Mr. Gandhi reached the Collectorate after a road show through the town. It was, in fact, the Gandhi family's show of strength with the Congress president flanked by the parivar in the open truck, with surging crowds walking along.
Mr. Rahul Gandhi is also contesting from Wayanad in Kerala where he filed his nomination papers on April 4. Amethi goes to the polls on May 6 in the fifth phase of the elections.
