New Delhi, Apr 9: Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly condemned the Maoist attack on a convoy in Chhattisgarh on Tuesday evening and assured that the sacrifices of security personnel will not go in vain.

'Strongly condemn the Maoist attack in Chhattisgarh. My tributes to the security personnel who were martyred. The sacrifices of these martyrs will not go in vain,' Mr Modi said in a tweet.

The Prime Minister described Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Bhima Mandavi, who was killed in the attack, as a dedicated Karyakarta of the BJP who was diligent and courageous.

"Bhima Mandavi was a dedicated Karyakarta of the BJP. Diligent and courageous, he assiduously served the people of Chhattisgarh. His demise is deeply anguishing. Condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti, he said in another tweet.

Mandavi and four personnel of Chhattisgarh Police were killed in an ambush on their convoy by Maoists in Dantewada district in Chhattisgarh.

According to the Central Reserve Police Force, the Maoists blew up the escort vehicle in which the lawmaker and four security personnel were travelling.

Five state police jawans were also gravely wounded in the ambush.

Dantewada, which falls under the Bastar Lok Sabha constituency, is slated to go to the polls in the first phase of Lok Sabha elections on Thursday. (UNI)
