New Delhi, Apr 8: Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday said it will implement the Supreme Court’s order on the verification of VVPAT from one EVM per constituency to five randomly selected EVMs in a constituency, with immediate effect.
“The ECI shall make all out efforts to operationalise and implement the directions of the Supreme Court with immediate effect”, poll body officials said. Earlier in the day, the Apex Court ruled that Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) of five Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in every constituency must be counted and the selection would be on randomly basis.
“We have interacted with the Election Commission officials. At the outset we would like to observe we are not doubting it may be possible that the system gives accurate results. But if the number increases, it would increase the greater satisfaction - the endeavour is to find to find a viable number of VVPAT”, the SC said. The SC’s ruling came after 21 opposition parties demanded counting and cross verification of VVPAT in at least 50 per cent of each polling stations in every assembly constituency, instead of one randomly selected booth of a constituency.
