New Delhi, Apr 6 : Giving a boost to BJP's sustained pro-nationalist and pro-armed forces campaign for 2019 battle, former Vice-Chief of Army Chief Lt Gen (Retd) Sarath Chand joined the saffron party on Saturday in presence of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj.
'It is very evident, if we look around, BJP is the natural choice of any 'fauji' (armyman). I am sure I will try my best to contribute whatever I can,' Lt Gen Chand said at a press conference at the party headquarters here. 'If you ask me what I am expecting, frankly nothing. I just want to be supportive of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his party,' he said adding that the country needs a strong leadership at this juncture.
Speaking on the occasion, the External Affairs Minister said it was good that on a festive day like this (Ugadi and Gudi Padwa), that a former army man with vast experience is joining the party. 'He served with the Garhwal region and has several achievements in his distinguished career and was honoured with Vishisht Seva Medal and Ati Vishisht medal,' she said, adding in 2018, he was decorated with Param Vishisht Seva medal.
'I served for 39-long years and when I retired I never thought I will come to politics...but some recent developments have made me think that at this juncture we need to project ourselves as a strong nation,' he said, adding the decision to join the BJP was also inspired by the Prime Minister. Lt Gen Chand said, 'We need to have a strong leader who should represent our country and also shows the strength of the country.'
In last few days, BJP leaders led by the Prime Minister have sought to highlight saffron party's pro-nationalist stand vis-a-vis the role and power of armed forces, specially after Congress party pledged in its manifesto the review of some of the provisions of AFSPA.
