Father Anthony Madassary, who recently figured in news in the name of Income Tax raid, is the owner of a business house with an annual turnover of Rs.40 crore.
It came as a surprise for the outside world as a priest is running business worth crores. Income Tax and police officials recently found an allegedly “unaccounted” cash of Rs 9.66 crore from Father Anthony Madassary who is also a close aide of Jalandhar Bishop Franco Mulakkal.
Father Anthony, who heads the Franciscan Missionaries of Jesus in Jalandhar, runs a private firm, ‘Sahodhaya’ along with three other priests namely Father Jose, Father Paul and Father Scara Shine. They supply books and stationery to over 45 schools of the diocese, besides having interests in construction business and security services.
The rise of Father Anthony who is a son of a small farmer in Kerala’s Kochi, was a sort of meteoric one. Father Anthony arrived in Punjab 31 years ago. He took over the Jalandhar Franciscan Missionaries of Jesus congregation in 2014 and started Sahodhaya.
Father Anthony created a panic by accusing the police of taking the total Rs 16.65 crore from his house. But police said that only Rs 9.66 crore was caught. An inquiry has been ordered by DGP Dinkar Gupta into Father Anthony’s allegations.
