It is tradition of AICC President to contest for two Lok Sabha seats: Mallikarjuna Kharge

Yadgir, Apr 2 : Senior Congress leader M Mallikarjuna Kharge today clarified that AICC President Rahul Gandhi contesting from two Lok Sabha seats was not because he was scared to contest from Amethi but, it was Congress tradition that who was AICC President to contest from two Lok Sabha seat.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Kharge expressed confidence that Rahul will win from both Wayanad and Amethi.

Mr Kharge said that according to this Congress tradition last time Sonia Gandhi also contested from two seats.

He said that Rahul Gandhi agreed to contest from Wayanad in Kerala because of Kerala Congress Workers strong demand. He chose Wayanad in Kerala as it is "geographically important", adding that the decision was taken to fight the "discriminatory" attitude of the BJP towards the Southern States.

He said that M I Shanav, current MP of Wayanad belongs to Congress. Wayanad is considered to be a safe seat. In 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress had bagged 41 per cent of the votes polled.  (UNI)
